width="100%">

This isn't so much a new track as much as it is a new release. I think I actually put this track together back in 2008, when I was still trying to wrap my head around using Apple's Soundtrack Pro (the worst sound program ever). Specifically, I was working on quantizing and snapping cuts from a sound while keeping everything in time with the rhythm. Some of my previous attempts with Michael Jackson remixes sounded a bit off because the samples were not snapping into the preset BPM. Specifically I wanted to focus on the sharp dropouts of the song to get a stronger beat in the remix. The mixing is pretty much nonexistent since the main focus for me at the time was timing. Hope you enjoy it!
You Really Got Me - Music Video

I'm beyond excited to finally show you guys the music video that I have been slaving over for the past two months. The video is for the band Michael Donner and the Southern Renaissance. I was introduced to the band by a friend of mine, Jake Gentry, with whom I had worked on his short Kiss From Calcutta and the feature Biodead. He and his partner Bryan Reugebrink wanted to create a music video and press package over a few days in November when the band would be in town for some shows. We worked out the treatment over the phone and sent over scouting pictures and sample videos.

The video was shot in a single day up at the ranch in the Angeles National Forrest. Interesting fact: I had planned a major element of the video to be the play between sun flares and actors, and to make the video feel like it was shot during sunset. On the day we shot, it was overcast and it even rained for a bit. So I had to get a little creative with After Effects and color timing to get it to look closer to the way I had envisioned and how I had pitched it.

The video took several weeks to edit and color time. I pretty much used every good frame that we had shot that day. If it wasn't in the video, there was something wrong with the shot. I got a lot of creative leeway with both the band and the managers, and there was very little in the way of notes. I think this was due in part to the planning and correspondence we had with the band in the period leading up to the shoot,

I'm super proud of this video, an ultra low budget affair and couldn't be happier about it. Thanks to Jake and Bryan for helping organize the band. Thanks to Matt Mangs and Mike Miller for helping on the shoot. Thanks to Allison, our beautiful actress for dealing with my "non-directing."
<img width='1' height='1' access to a piano at college. I ended up spending a lot more than I was planning, something like $6000, to get something with a lot of features, including a sequencer recorder and midi arpeggiator etc., so that it would have longevity worth the price tag. I've been using it ever since, for live performances, and to score features. There's still features on it that I have no idea how to use. This song is not a remix or mashup of anything. Just from my brain through the korg to protools. I guess I was going for a Justice Daft Punk sort of vibe.
<img width='1' height='1' been spending the better part of a year on The Stranger's Kiss, written and directed by Aaron Lomeli. I collaborated on story, co-produced, shot and lit, edited and mixed sound, composed, and color timed this project. And so I treat it as a calling card representative of my style and sensibilities. We're almost finished with the sound, music included. The song is the first attempt at fooling around with the beat masher functions on the controller. The nice thing about Traktor is that it comes with a bunch of filters built in that you can fool around with to help difficult transitions or to punch up songs.

I've run into the first potential problem with the controller though...One of the buttons is starting to stick. You'll actually notice a few times near the end of the song that the beatmasher timing drops off too late in some parts because the button didn't disengage when I first pressed it. Fortunately, I bought it from sweetwater. They throw in a year warranty on parts. So I can always mail it back when things start getting busted. Its a shame that the controller is a little chincy in that regard though.
<img width='1' height='1' decided to take a look at a controller solution from Traktor. I got a package, which included a controller with mixer and software, which I've been fooling around with for a few months now. After finding the record function, I spat this out late one evening. This evening, actually. Check the time stamp. Enjoy (until it gets taken down).
Props Means Photoshop

This is part II of my epic Astronauts blog saga. Today we'll focus on the photoshop side of the job. Most of the props used in the film needed fake labels and such to keep it copyright free. Aside from shopping for the right props themselves, the photoshopping was probably the most creative part of the job. So here's a sampling of some of the stuff I was commissioned to make:

This past Sunday was the 2 year anniversary of the ranch burning down. As has now become tradition, a small band of former ranch tenants and official ranch inductees spent the day soaking in the sun, the river, the 2 and a half feet of trunk pizza, the whiskey, the beer, the company. Since there's still no power, water, or toilets up there, we had to end the trek shortly after nightfall. At sunset, we all took the late Betsy's ashes on one last walk to wildwood (the only walk in which Kaiza carried her the whole time).

This video was shot on the trail back to our cars. It was all shot in one take and essentially took the entirety of the walk back. We get to see the last of the sunset give way to twilight. I decided to color time the video to closer resemble how I remember it looking at the end of that booze and sun filled day. Audio was recorded on camera (which is why it sounds so great), a pocket sized point and shoot Canon ELPH300.

Though we spent the entire day up there, I think that this 4 minutes pretty much sums up how the day went. For those of you who didn't make it, I plan on making these semi camping trips to the ranch a more regular thing, and I hope to slowly work my way up to getting more amenities up there. I'll keep you posted...
I thought I signed on for a Sci-Fi movie...

Where to begin?

In 2009 I was introduced to a "contractor" that my folks had used to redo the interior of a condo. This guy was eccentric, kinda looks like Mr. Clean if he was a retired boxer. A mad scientist with a thousand crazy ideas, and one big secret: zero track record for following through. His ideas were too big for his own good, but he had a knack for getting the attentions of people with money. Send them a sketch, get a greenlight, and it's all downhill from there. So, naturally, he was a perfect fit for the film industry. Jerzy Dream was his name.

So I guess that's where I come in. Jerzy somehow gets in front of this director/producer (Karl Colpert) at Cineville, a small production company in Santa Monica. Carl has a script called Land of the Astronauts about a film composer down on his luck who gets a job driving a limo, and a below modest budget. So Jerzy begins to promise Karl the world, for cheap. He can get and paint the limo, he can mold a vodka bottle into a woman's shape (a key prop for the film), he can dress all the sets, he can do everything and anything. And a naïve Karl believes every word of it, doesn't follow up on background checks and now Jerzy Dream is the production designer of his very first feature.

I get a call from Jerzy, would I be interested in helping out on a movie he was working on. He needed an extra pair of hands and he knew I was interested in getting deeper into the business. So I agreed to go to a little meeting on Thursday evening to meet the director and chat.

So, I show up at the "meeting" and all department heads are present. We're going to go through the script, line by line, and break it down. After all, we start principal in 7 DAYS. Wait, what?? So we go through each scene, mainly for art department to talk about all the locations: this grimy warehouse needs to be turned into a limo office. This entire apartment complex needs to be dressed so we can look into EVERY apartment window and see what's happening inside. Every scene was worse than the last, and Jerzy's sitting there nodding his head to every question, can you do this? We're going to need that. Sure no problem. I'm realizing that I'm going to be single handedly responsible for making good on all of Jerzy's promises.

During this read through I have a mild heart attack, collect myself, and begin to frantically text Monica (Sotto), the only production coordinator I know who might be able to get us out of this mess. And she's interested, and available (thank God). The meeting ends, I pull Jerzy aside, and after the urge to strangle the life out of him fades, I ask him whether or not he's began prep for any of the locations, seeing as how we were a week away from shooting. Could he get me schedules, location addresses, prop and set design lists and needs, script breakdowns etc. Nope, hasn't even seen the locations, hasn't started anything. Urge to strangle, rising...

Through some sort of super human miracle, Monica is able to get our heads out of the clouds and organizes the entire production design department within 3 days. I become prop master and take a meagre budget to get set dressings and all props. Monica takes care of EVERYTHING else. Monica and I become the production design and start to hoist the film onto our shoulders. Jerzy is in charge of the Limo and the lady-shaped vodka bottle.

(Stay tuned for part II of the Astronauts Saga...)
Ranch Camping Trip

It was a full moon this past weekend. I got a call from Andy. We had been talking about camping up at the ranch with the idea that we could just sleep in the back of our cars in leu of having any tents or other camping equipment which burned up in the fire. Originally, we had considered spending the night after the Ranch Reunion II party, but Andy found out that there was literally no moon that night and walking around would be virtually impossible without flashlights. So, we made a snap judgement to just pack what we could into our cars and head out there for the day to see what we could see and then maybe spend the night if we were feeling it.

Independently of that, I had been talking with Andy, Mangs, and Miller about shooting a ranch commercial or several for the upcoming reunion. Mainly for nostalgic reasons, but also to flex our creative muscles while CCCC is on hiatus. The plan was to go up to the ranch on Tuesday and to bring all of our filming equipment (minus lights since there's no power up there) and to come up with something on the spot.

When the camping idea came around, the thought was to kill two birds with one stone and just film during the day and camp at night. However, when we got up there, we became so caught up in whimsey, we spent most of the day hiking around and lounging at the river. We kicked some ideas around at the river, but nothing was sticking. We did decide that we wanted to peruse an attempt to get in bed with Funny Or Die by shooting and combining several sketches to showcase our style. But perhaps that was too long term a goal to take action on. Maybe that'll be the topic of another blog post.

Being motivated by guilt, as I often am, I decided as the sun was setting that I had to get something shot. It was looking less and less likely that we were going to meet up to shoot on Tuesday, and if I was going to waste my weekend playing at the ranch, I should walk away with something to show for it. All I wanted was a simple idea. Not comedic or touching or dramatic, just a chance to show the ranch as it is now. So much time passes up there with virtually nobody around that it has an almost tangible empty feeling. More than ever, you can actually feel what the valley must have been like long before there were any people or cities for miles in any direction. So what if you woke up one day in this place? You have no idea how you got there or what happened or how long ago. It just is what it is. There's nobody around, possibly for miles and the sun's setting.

Originally, I was planning on being the main character, and taking more of a personal spin on it: as I walk around the ranch now, with no one around, how do I feel, what are my thoughts? But the sun was going down, fast. We literally only had an hour at most to shoot everything before the sun went down behind the mountains and we would lose the golden look we were going for. So we made the snap judgement to have Mangs be the subject so I could be behind the camera to line up shots without having to run back and forth. And so we began shooting. Andy started by setting up a timelapse shot with his camera out in the valley to satisfy his own guilt, but shortly after he setup his cam in the valley, he came up the driveway to help us out. After describing the basic ideas of showcasing the ranch backgrounds, the calm and the quiet, the waking up and wandering around, we set to shoot what we could get.

We didn't allow ourselves more than two takes on any given setup. Even so we ran out of light about half way through, which can be seen in the cut since we essentially shot it chronologically. I used apple Color to shift the blue post-sunset shots to match the orange of the stuff shot before the sun went down. I also put in some artificial grain and a mild soft filter over the image to soften the harsh HD video look without losing the sharpness. We shot on my Canon 7D with a 50mm prime lens and a 10-24mm zoom for the wide shots. Because I had forgotten my ND filter at home we had to shoot at a high shutter speed to keep the shallow depth of field.

The sound was created by combining many different types of wind sounds with a little bit of the production audio for Matt's footsteps etc. There's such an empty calming sound up there when everything is silent and I wanted to try to recreate that. The music went through many different iterations before settling on a sparse Tosca piano score. At the beginning I wanted to feel like this was a dream and that there would be some sort of ethereal build to the score that would eventually take over the sound in an overwhelming fashion. But I decided that that approach was too overt and I wanted to complement the sound design rather than contradict it. It took a full day to get it through post including finding a compression rate that yielded a good image without taking up much more than 100mb of space. Ultimately, the compression blurred more of the film grain than I wanted, but that was the compromise for a small size video.

The more we shot, the more ideas for different shots came up. If nothing else, we really started to wrap our heads around what could be shot up there and I think we left with a great desire to go back and shoot more. There is some sort of a phobia I have had for the past two years that I am only now starting to identify and understand. I was afraid to go up there. I certainly didn't want other people to go up there either. It's a dangerous place if you're not careful. But it's been sitting there for two years now and it's not getting any use. Don't get me wrong, I can't afford to do anything substantial with the place. There's nothing to connect power to, there's no water system up there anymore, and I'm not really able to build anything up there. But this camping trip with Andy and Mangs really took down some mental barriers about the viability of the ranch. It's beautiful up there, and now that the public areas are opened up once again, there's a lot of people making use of that beauty.

So anyway, I'm thinking about new ways of using the ranch to make assets of what I have and not to consider it a burdon or blemish. So stay posted. Who knows, there may be another ranch party in your future...

Japan! After flying for 12 hours, the longest I've ever been in a confined space, I landed in Narita Airport and took a high speed train to Tokyo where I went straight to my hotel in Shibuya. No sooner than I had put my bags down, I was whisked away to my first dinner, which consisted of various cutlets, the best rice I've ever had, some grey potato mush (also delicious) and probably other stuff I can't remember. I finished the first draft of the script. So, that's great. The bad news is, it's short. Like, waaay short. So, I gotta get right back in there and beef it up some. But the story's there and everything. It's by no means a complex ground breaking story, although zombie westerns are thus far an overlooked genre. But, it's got all the bells and whistles there, all the parts and doo dads. Actually, I'm kind of glad that I have to go over it again, since I'm new to the next step of putting it together in a pitch package to get some moneys for it. Also, I'm scared to show it to my peers for critique (AKA getting creatively raped). But people seem genuinely interested in reading the script to see what exactly goes on in a zombie western, and I guess I'm anxious to have people give me some feedback.

There's another poster here today. Trying to keep them coming. This one was for an alternate title I'm considering "The Good, The Bad, and The Undead." I'm still on the fence about it, and leaning towards good 'ole zombie western. Starting to dial in the look of the marketing though. I like the dirty parchment background being the unifying element, with the paint spatter and aging. I wanted it to feel like it was found in some old chest in the attic or something. Of course, for this design, I essentially copied the look for the good bad and ugly poster (Sorry, Sergio). And get used to it, cus I'm definately influenced by his westerns as far as shot composition and pacing are concerned (though my movie probably wont be two and a half hours).

Oh, unrelated but interesting. I'm trying to get a job doing score for an indie action movie, so I gots to get up on my action music chops. I'm working on putting together an action medley to show the director and then I'm going to check out the rough cut some time soon, maybe next week. Apparently they got my info from scoring BIO DEAD, which was very synth 80's goodness. Not sure how my skills can be applied to a modern action movie. Should be interesting. So I may have to procrastinate a little more on the script before getting it out there for people to peruse. I'll try to have another full length draft by the end of the week.

Also, buttered toast always works. Always.

Also, hey, has anybody tried toasting a hot dog bun and putting peanut butter and jelly in there and a banana instead of the hotdog?

What's In a Title?

So, I've been trying to come up with a name for the Zombie Western every since I first started thinking about the concept. There are very few other zombie westerns out there right now, which is great for me. Really, the only thing that you can go to blockbuster and watch is, The Quick and The Undead, which seems to have a more modern style than the story I am working on. So, with all the racking of the brain, the only thing I've come up with so far is, The Good The Bad and The Undead. It's not too bad a title, but it has sort of a tongue in cheek quality that I'm not looking for. It's definitely not a comedy, although it may cause people to laugh at its badness, which I don't mind. But I don't want people walking in to the movie anticipating a slapstick western.

So then I started thinking about Snakes on a Plane. It's hard not to have a day where my mind wanders to SOAP. Hey, I just realized the acronym is SOAP, how come no one ever told me that before? Anyway, most people are aware of the phenomenon that was marketing for SOAP. All grass roots, with that stupid title at the helm. As soon as somebody read the title (and saw sam jackson attached) they were excited. So, why not do that with my movie? Let's call it Zombie Western! Then people know exactly what they're in for, and it has that same quality of fun movie, straight forward, no punches pulled. So, that's what I'm thinking for the time being, and I think that the new poster reflects that.

I'm also interested in the whole marketing thing that SOAP did with the blog updates and behind the scenes videos to keep fans interested. So I guess that's why I'm doing the blog thing and the posters. Tryin' to hype it up. But how do you get a bunch of eyes on it? SOAP had Sam Jackson, and it worked well. I got nothing but an idea, and I'm hoping to pitch for some monies soon after the script is finished. But that's always the big question for the internet marketing: How do I get people to see it?

Anyways, I'm still working on the script, and it's coming along nicely. I'm hoping to have a first draft done shortly. Wish me the luckiest of luck. And spread the word, the ranch is doing a Zombie Western, and it's going to be awesome!

Zombie Western

So, I've started work on a new project. To be honest, its my first project that I could call my own post college. I've always wanted to shoot something on the ranch, ever since we first moved in August, 2005. We were actually able to shoot the awesome show, Mountain Man over the course of a year and a half, off and on (mostly off). We put a lot of work in to shooting the first season of that web series, some of which can be seen on the interwebs right now. In shooting Mountain Man, I really realized for the first time, how much mileage you could get out of shooting up at the ranch, given the right setting and tone of the project.

Sos, recently I started working on ideas for a full feature to be shot, mostly on the ranch, for next to nothing. Mountain Man was made with a bare bones crew and virtually no budget, except out of pocket. However, I knew that out out of pocket days were over, and most of my peers were still unemployed and trying to work on their own projects. My passion has always been horror movies (although not exclusively) and I knew that doing a horror would be more conducive to the budget constraints.

After Mountain Man, I got a jobbie doing post sound for a no budget horror movie called BIODEAD. I got to know the director and producer, who pretty much did everything except the sound design. I realized that with the right mindset, you could really pull off a fun and entertaining horror movie that could actually be bought. Rent it on DVD next month. I demand it!

And that was all the encouragement I needed to convince myself that I could make a feature, given all of the equipment that the ranch has been able to accrue over the years. I was thinking a camping slasher movie. you know, kids camping in the desert/ranch and a boogie man monster thing eats/slices them. With all the remakes in theaters to that effect, it wasn't difficult to come up with a plotline or two. But they were pretty stale at best. To be honest, I'm not sure exactly where the idea for the zombie western came from. But whenever I mentioned those two words to anybody, they would instantly know exactly what I was talking about. That interested me a lot.

So, I started doing some research on my favorite westerns, the Sergio Leone's, and Deadwood. I was already familiar with the zombie genre and the main themes therein. All that remained was trying to mash 'em together (I know, I'm so post modern, I make you sick) in a meaningful and entertaining way. How hard could it be?

BUY MY PHOTOS!

Yeah that's right, I'm a photographer too. But I swear I'm still working on it. I've finished up some of the menu animations and even some music. The character select screen is finished and animated
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_VcWDFLSQPlk/SAO_pn1YxRI/AAAAAAAAAC8/y6V4NdNowTY/s320/character+select.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5189201917449389330" />
as is the versus screen.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_VcWDFLSQPlk/SAO_031YxSI/AAAAAAAAADE/4uv0kqeMS0M/s320/versus.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5189202110722917666" />
I've also finished animating the second half of the title screen.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_VcWDFLSQPlk/SAO_-H1YxTI/AAAAAAAAADM/SykL6KzcRNI/s320/title+screen.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5189202269636707634" />
So I guess the actual fight is the biggest thing on the horizon that I need to finish.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_VcWDFLSQPlk/SAPAYn1YxUI/AAAAAAAAADU/6CkB8UyC8pM/s320/MK+Fight+Screen.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5189202724903241026" />
Then a few more menu screens and sound. There's still a LOT more to do, and because I also need to think about getting paid sometimes in addition to working on other projects, things are moving slow, but steady. Speaking of other projects, I also finished making a quick logo for Engaged's Quick Tips,
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_VcWDFLSQPlk/SAPA4n1YxVI/AAAAAAAAADc/qZdJ6sFQvrI/s320/quick+tips+title.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5189203274659054930" />
which are supplementary clips for the wedding show, that I co-produced and did sound on. Lots of cross pollination, different hats, collaboration. It's all good. It just doesn't pay the bills. But hey, you can't let bills rule your life, right? And I've been asked to do quick things here and there, like the logo's for the ranch quickies, and fliers etc. I gotta say, for all the producing i've been doing for the past, I still get worked up over doing smaller things like this because it really gets my creative juices flowing. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_VcWDFLSQPlk/R-mLOlfjVyI/AAAAAAAAACU/DmpJzJISwk4/s320/spaceland+copy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5181825928965347106" />
It's tough to strike that balance between management and business savvy and creativity and hands on work.

Everyone Likes a Quickie

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_VcWDFLSQPlk/R-Pxw1fjVwI/AAAAAAAAACE/ncub3K7cwSI/s320/IMG_2051.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5180249817701635842" />
Wow. Thanks everybody for the positive responses on our new series of ranch quickies. I can't help but lament over the waning attention spans of our fair public, but hey, you gotta go with the flow, sink or swim. Ever since Miller and I bought that HDD handy-cam (with hybrid night shot), our lives have significantly changed, for the better i hope. It really revolutionizes the way we record our lives to video. It used to just be special occasions and holidays, but now, you never know when a camcorder is going to be stuck in your face capturing one of your "better moments." As an unfortunate side effect, we end up getting hours and hours of endless gigs of video to sift through. And most of it is boring beyond belief. But, every once in a while, there a little nugget of gold buried in there. And so the ranch quickie was born. Keep you eyes peeled for more, as they are relatively easy to produce (once you find the right 10 seconds), and of course there's more clever ranch commercials on the horizon...Splendid.

MORTAL TEST!!!!!!

Damn, this animation stuff is hard. Like Mortal Kombat big. In fact, that's what it is: a Mortal Kombat spoof that, i guess, is sorta like a sequel to the kung fu bbquaid commercial from oh so long ago. If not, click the link above to check out the old commercial. This one is very post heavy as you can imagine, and we just finished shooting Miller and myself on a green screen. Mistress Amy will be on the scene shortly, as soon as i call her and schedule a shoot day, and then its off to post where backgrounds need to be created and animated and compositing galore.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_VcWDFLSQPlk/R9XLMumGaRI/AAAAAAAAABk/Hf6W7Gs6bhY/s400/IMG_2535+copy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5176266766258956562" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_VcWDFLSQPlk/R9XMNumGaSI/AAAAAAAAABs/-xKuApf21FI/s400/IMG_2550+copy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5176267882950453538" />

My First New Commercial

Hooray! The pyramid is reported to have the power to break the sound barrier and literally blast negative energy from the vacinity. Now this is not to say that the ranch is filled with undesired negative energy. But it does have a long and strange past and sometimes the vibes up here can be, well, strange. But soon that will all change. We will post pics and video as soon as we have it. And then, of course, you'll just have to come up to really feel the difference. Especially those of you who say it's too scary to be here at night (you know who you are). Speaking of coming up to the ranch, we're thinking a ranch redemption redemption is in order very soon. Possibly the end of March. So keep it under your caps. Now if you'll excuse me, i need to finish my foil suit before the tesla pyramid arrives.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_VcWDFLSQPlk/R8W23x3-UkI/AAAAAAAAABI/a1itbHs-_Jg/s320/tesla-coil-suit-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5171740816502051394" />

I like Animation Live Action Hybrids

Wow.
